ChatGPT Work: OpenAI's task agent (replaces Operator and ChatGPT agent)

The agent in ChatGPT for longer, multi-step jobs that end in a finished file, with scheduled and event-triggered tasks. OpenAI folded Operator into ChatGPT agent, and has now retired ChatGPT agent in favor of Work.

What it is

ChatGPT Work is the agent side of ChatGPT. OpenAI’s help center says Chat is for fast conversation, and Work is an agent for longer, multi-step jobs and finished deliverables such as a document, spreadsheet, presentation, report, or site. Work can use connected apps and a browser, run once or on a schedule, and monitor for changes.

What happened to Operator. Operator was an earlier OpenAI agent. Its help center says Operator was folded into ChatGPT agent mode and the Operator site is gone, and that ChatGPT agent is itself no longer available: use ChatGPT Work for longer tasks. If you are looking for Operator, this is where it went.

Event-triggered tasks are supported on eligible plans: Work can run a task when a supported event happens in a connected app, such as a new Gmail message, a new Slack channel message, or GitHub pull request activity.

Best sales uses

The sales uses below are our inference from what Work does, not from an OpenAI sales page.

  • Account research file. Give it a list of accounts and ask for a spreadsheet with sources for each row.
  • Weekly pipeline readout. Schedule a task that turns your exported deal notes into a short summary every Monday.
  • Call-note roll-up. Hand it a folder of call notes and ask which objections keep coming up, with the note each came from.

Who it’s for

Reps, managers, and owners who want a finished file from messy inputs. Not for anything that should reach a customer without a person reading it first.

Setup effort

Easy. Open ChatGPT, choose Work, describe the outcome, and attach files. In the desktop app, Work can use local files and apps with your permission, so grant only the folders a task needs.

Pricing (checked 2026-10-15)

  • Work follows the same usage structure as Codex: an included allowance, plus credits you can buy. OpenAI says Work usage varies by task.
  • ChatGPT Pro is monthly only: Pro 100 is $100, Pro 200 is $200, Pro 500 is $500.
  • ChatGPT Business: Standard seat $20 a month billed annually or $25 monthly; Premium seat $100 annually or $125 monthly; at least two seats.
  • Plus plans include GPT-6 Astra in Work with limited use, per OpenAI. We did not check the Plus price.

Caveats

  • Approvals matter. On web and mobile, approve or decline actions on screen. Don’t approve a send you haven’t read.
  • Event-triggered tasks run without you watching. Use them to draft or summarize, not to reply to customers.
  • Names change fast. Operator, ChatGPT agent, and Work are three names OpenAI has used for its task agent, and the older two are gone. Check the help center before you plan around a feature.
  • Privacy. Connect only the apps a task needs, and read Safe Use before pointing it at customer data.

What we couldn't verify

  • Sales fit. OpenAI's pages describe Work in general terms (research, analysis, documents, spreadsheets, presentations). Using it for sales is our inference from those capabilities, not something OpenAI documents.
  • Plus plan price and Work allowance. We did not check them.
  • How much a typical research task costs in usage or credits. OpenAI says Work usage varies by task.
  • Whether any current plan still has agent mode. OpenAI's help page says ChatGPT agent is no longer available, while the same page still lists old plan limits.
